Kuari Pass Trek

Duration: 6 Days Difficulty: Moderate Max Altitude: 3,650 m (11,975 ft) Best Season: Dec–Mar & Apr–Jun / Sep–Nov

Overview

The Kuari Pass trek in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas is famous for its sweeping views of snow-clad giants like Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba and Trishul. Starting from Joshimath and the nearby village of Dhak, the route winds through dense oak and rhododendron forests, traditional Garhwali villages and wide alpine meadows, or bugyals, before reaching the panoramic Kuari Pass at around 3,650 meters.

It is a moderate trek that is beginner-friendly in good conditions, yet exciting enough for experienced trekkers — especially in winter when the trail transforms into a snow trek. Ideal almost year-round, Kuari Pass offers two very different personalities: a snow-white wonderland from December to March, and lush green forests and meadows from April to November.

6-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Haridwar / Dehradun to Joshimath
Drive: 9–10 hours Route: Along the Alaknanda valley Stay: Guesthouse / hotel in Joshimath
Drive from Haridwar or Dehradun to Joshimath following the Ganga and Alaknanda river valleys past Rishikesh, Devprayag and Rudraprayag. Reach Joshimath by evening, meet your trek leader and rest for the night in the mountain town that serves as the base for Kuari Pass.
Day 2 — Joshimath to Guling via Dhak
Drive: Short drive to Dhak Trek: 4–6 km Stay: Campsite at Guling
After a short drive to Dhak village, begin the trek on a gradually ascending trail through mixed forests and terraced fields. Pass small hamlets and enjoy your first open views of Dronagiri and surrounding peaks before reaching the forest-side campsite at Guling.
Day 3 — Guling to Khullara
Trek: 4–6 km Time: 4–5 hours Stay: Campsite at Khullara
Continue climbing through dense oak and rhododendron forests, emerging into more open clearings and meadows. The higher you go, the more dramatic the views of Dronagiri and the Nanda Devi range become. Camp at Khullara, a picturesque meadow surrounded by mountain ridges.
Day 4 — Khullara to Kuari Pass & back
Trek: 8–10 km Time: 6–8 hours Highest Point: 3,650 m / 11,975 ft
This is your summit day. Start early and ascend steadily to Kuari Pass, traversing snowfields in winter or rolling green slopes in summer and autumn. From the top, soak in sweeping views of Nanda Devi, Kamet, Chaukhamba and dozens of other Himalayan peaks. After enjoying the panorama, return to Khullara or nearby Tali campsite for the night.
Day 5 — Khullara / Tali to Auli
Trek: 8–10 km Route: Via Gorson Bugyal Stay: Auli / Joshimath
Descend through the vast meadows of Gorson Bugyal, one of the most beautiful walkways in the region, with continuous views of the Himalayan wall. In winter, this stretch is usually covered in snow; in spring and summer it becomes a carpet of green. Finish the trek at Auli and drive down to Joshimath or stay at Auli, depending on the plan.
Day 6 — Auli / Joshimath to Return
Drive: 9–10 hours End Point: Haridwar / Dehradun
Drive back along the same scenic highway route to Haridwar or Dehradun, bringing your Kuari Pass journey to a close. Expect to reach by evening, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
