Gaumukh – Tapovan Trek

Duration: 6 Days Difficulty: Difficult Max Altitude: 4,463 m (14,640 ft) Best Season: May–June & Sep–Oct

Overview

Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a challenging and popular trek in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, known for its powerful combination of spiritual significance and stunning high-mountain scenery. The route starts from the holy town of Gangotri, follows the Bhagirathi River to Gaumukh (the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the source of the Ganges), and then climbs to the high-altitude meadows of Tapovan beneath Mount Shivling.

Across 46–48 kilometers and roughly six days on the trail, you experience everything from serene forests and rocky glacial moraines to open alpine meadows and towering Himalayan walls. This trek is best suited for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience who wish to combine a sacred pilgrimage feel with a demanding Himalayan expedition.

Key Highlights

  • Gaumukh Snout: Stand at the massive, icy mouth of the Gangotri Glacier—the sacred source of the River Ganges.
  • Mt. Shivling Views: Get an unmatched, base-to-summit view of the 6,543 m pyramid peak, widely considered the "Matterhorn of India."
  • Tapovan Meadows: Reach the serene alpine grasslands (14,640 ft) where sages live in caves year-round for meditation.
  • Bhagirathi Massif: Trek in the literal shadow of the Bhagirathi I, II, and III peaks, which dominate the skyline throughout the journey.
